Cristobal Huet of Saint-Martin-d'Hères, France is a professional ice hockey goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens. Huet was originally drafted into the National Hockey League by the Los Angeles Kings, where he played in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens.
Cristobal played ice hockey for France in the Nagano 1998 and Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games where he experienced the pride of representing his country.
Lifelong Memories by Cristobal Huet
I have had the privilege of participating in two Olympic Games, in Nagano in 1998 and in Salt Lake City in 2002. I still have vivid memories of those few weeks of competition that are very unique experiences in the life of any athlete.
My first Games were the Winter Olympics in Nagano when professional hockey players were allowed to participate for the first time. The eastern culture that permeated those Games was special and created a distinct interest among western athletes. That cultural experience was highlighted in the Opening Ceremony which was attended by Emperor Akihito. This was not the typical hockey tournament!
The Opening Ceremony in the Rice‑Eccles Stadium of the Salt Lake City Games was unforgettable and I think that every spectator and participant knew they were experiencing a unique moment, highlighted by a spectacular presentation. To some degree, we were all taking part in sport history.
Representing one’s country creates many strong emotions. All the athletes feel a sense of pride and humility at the idea of having been chosen to represent their country. Wearing the three‑coloured jersey at the Olympic Games and participating with my fellow countrymen in a world‑class competition was a rare privilege.
Rubbing elbows with athletes from various countries is a unique experience of the Olympic Games. The Olympic Village in Salt Lake City was located at the University of Utah campus, which promised a friendly, fraternal atmosphere. And although the Olympic Games are competitive, with many athletes aiming for a medal, it was nice to see the spirit of camaraderie settled over the Village. It was also great to see how quickly the cultural barriers fell. Meeting and talking with others was easy.
The Winter Olympics are an opportunity to celebrate diversity and fraternity, as well as sport. The competitions catch the attention and captivate millions of people around the world. Being part of such an event was a highlight of my career.
