Transportation Modes

Torchbearer Casey Farties, assisted by members of the Abenaki tribe, carries
the Olympic Flame across the Connecticut River by canoe during the Salt Lake
City 2002 Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay.
Canada has a rich history of innovation including many modes of transportation that have been influenced by the country’s many cultures.
Throughout the course of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, the Olympic Flame will be carried by torchbearers using many of these modes. Each type of transportation carries a special story that will be featured at a significant place within the vast geography of Canada.
Over land, air and water —the route plans will feature up to 100 different modes of transportation including:
- First Nations canoe
- horse-drawn carriage
- cross-country skis
- kayak
- snowmobile
- tractor
- mountain bike
- ferry; including a day on a BC Ferry
- airplane; including two days in British Columbia aboard Air Canada
And there are many more that will be showcased as planning continues —you just might be surprised to discover how the Olympic Flame makes its way across Canada.
