Delivering Goods and Services During the Games
Vehicle Traffic
To ensure people and business in the Games region can move efficiently and athletes can get to their events, businesses and organizations are asked to:
- Make arrangements for deliveries and service calls to take place outside of the Games period
- Order in advance
- Consolidate shipments and orders to minimize vehicle trips
For goods or services that must be delivered during the month of February 2010, here are some guidelines:
Deliveries in Vancouver (general)
- No special protocols will be in place to deliver goods or services in Vancouver, with the exception of those destined for an official 2010 Winter Games venue, and a handful of properties at/adjacent to official Games venues. Please note: the protocols for delivering to these properties are generally on a smaller scale and are less involved than delivering to an official Games venue.
- It is strongly recommended that service deliveries and goods movement in Downtown Vancouver be scheduled between midnight and 6 am for the month of February 2010. If before 6 am is not possible, the next preferred window is before noon.
- To keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible, on street parking will be removed from many streets in Downtown Vancouver. These streets will have “no stopping anytime” restrictions from February 4 to March 1, 2010, including in current designated loading zones.
- If you would normally stop in any of these areas, you will need to look for an alternate location. Consider laneways, alleys and the many privately operated parkades in the city.
- Some additional streets will also have the on street parking removed, but in most of these cases, existing loading zones will be preserved in these specific areas.
- Map is available on the Host City website, accessed through vancouver.ca
- Start planning now with your shippers and clients. Make the necessary arrangements to deliver/receive goods before
- 6 am and confirm the loading/drop off area for your business, organization or clients.
Deliveries in Whistler (general)
- Due to the limited road network and reduced parking in Whistler, service deliveries and goods movement in Whistler Village and Upper Village must be scheduled between midnight and 6 am for the month of February 2010.
- Deliveries outside the Village must be made between 10 pm and 6 am.
There will be some opportunity for deliveries made in smaller vehicles (14 ft truck or less)
- Between noon and 3 pm throughout Whistler, except at Creekside
- Please note: if travelling to Whistler between 6 am and 6 pm, commercial vehicles will require a Sea to Sky checkpoint permit.
Deliveries to Official Olympic and Paralympic Venues
- VANOC will have exclusive use of the official venues, and will manage all required deliveries.
- In some cases, VANOC must bring in other products or suppliers for its venues, as outlined by our sponsor agreements. For example, official 2010 Winter Games venues will only serve Coca-Cola, Molson and Vincor products.
- As a supplier or delivery/logistics company that currently serves any official Games venues, your first step should be to confirm with the current venue owner that you will continue to service these facilities during the Olympic period.
- If you are confirmed to deliver goods to an official Games venue, special protocols will be in place. They are outlined in detail in VANOC’s Delivering to Venues Manual. To request a copy, please contact your venue owner or client.
Delivering to Select Adjacent Businesses
- A handful of businesses located in close proximity to the Main Media Centre, BC Place/Canada Hockey Place, Whistler Medals Plaza, Whistler Creekside and the Whistler Media Centre currently use roads for their deliveries that will be closed during the Games. As a result, deliveries to these properties will require special protocols to ensure access to the area. The protocols are on a much smaller scale than delivering to an official Games venue.
- In these instances, the delivery must come at a specified time. The delivery vehicle will require a permit, and the delivery must be registered on Vancouver 2010’s Master Delivery Schedule.
- Permits will be provided to the business or property owner to then distribute to their suppliers. The business or property owner will also register their deliveries on the Master Schedule.
- If you are delivering to any of these select businesses or properties (see below), please contact your client to ensure the delivery is registered and that they provide you with the necessary permit.
- When you arrive on site to make your delivery, the permit and registration will be verified and the vehicle will undergo a brief form of screening.
