Teachable Moments

The Teachable Moments for the 2010 Classroom DVD and brochure package, distributed by the BC Ministry of Education in September to every elementary and secondary school in BC includes videos, podcasts, teachers’ guides, brochures, hyperlinks and other learning resources. We invite and encourage you to reproduce this DVD, or to browse the Teachable Moments website, to share with educators and with community colleagues interested in components of these education resources. The brochure can be downloaded and printed from sharingthedream.gov.bc.ca.

Teachable Moments videos of Olympic and Paralympic athletes offer valuable messages about the power of youth to achieve their dreams and become stellar global citizens. For more information, please visit sharingthedream.gov.bc.ca/teachable_moments/welcome.php.

Student Welcome Cards

The Ministry of Education and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) invite all British Columbia K-12 students to create art that extends a warm welcome to visiting athletes, team members and dignitaries. Welcome cards will be placed on night tables in every guest room in the Olympic and Paralympic Villages in Vancouver and Whistler. The keepsake cards will include as many individual images from BC students as possible, and each will feature the artist's first name, grade, school and school e-mail address. By including the generic school e-mail address, the recipient has the opportunity to send a thank you to the artist and his/her school.
For complete details, view the instructions on how to submit art at <http://www.sharingthedream.gov.bc.ca/assets/pdfs/en/welcome_card_invite.pdf>. To see how your students’ art will appear on the welcome card, view a sample card at <http://www.sharingthedream.gov.bc.ca/assets/pdfs/en/sample_card.pdf>. The art may be used for display in an online gallery, and for posters and media displays in the Olympic and Paralympi Villages.

If you have any questions regarding the submission guidelines, please send an e-mail to sharingthedream@gov.bc.ca and include "Student Welcome Cards" in the subject line.

Please keep a school copy of the completed parent consent form <http://www.sharingthedream.gov.bc.ca/assets/pdfs/en/welcome_card_consent.pdf> granting permission to the BC Ministry of Education and VANOC to use the individual student’s art.

Help celebrate the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the spirit of global citizenship by showcasing BC students’ art through the Student Welcome Cards project.
We encourage educators to submit their students’ art as soon, and as often, as possible. Final submission deadline is Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

Adopt a Country

This school-based program builds awareness of global citizenship by encouraging students to learn about other countries, and by connecting BC students with their peers around the world. The program is designed to be integrated into existing class work. Read the Adopt a Country School Guide for details on how to adopt one of the 2010 Winter Games participating countries. Schools across Canada are encouraged to register to receive program updates, including opportunities to connect with schools in their adopted country. For more information, please visit sharingthedream.gov.bc.ca.

2010 Spirit Schools

2010 Spirit Schools step up to the podium to make a commitment to engage in elements of the Vancouver 2010 Education Program and the World Healthy Living Challenge. Educators who register their school by October 31 to become a 2010 Spirit School are eligible for random draw rewards for their school, certificates and three final gold, silver and bronze awards for levels of participation. For more information, please visit gamestown2010.ca/2010_spirit_schools.

Student Reporter

The 2010 Winter Games offer a relevant, exciting context for engaging students as reporters. When the torch relay comes through your town or city, or your school is visited by Olympic and Paralympic athletes, or your community has a mini-Olympic or Paralympic Games or festival, your students will be "on the beat" investigating, recording and reporting on the sights, sounds and emotions. Showcase student work via school or community newscasts, newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs and documentaries. Teachers can publish items produced by students on the 2010 Spirit School website and in the /EDU Project Showcase section.
