Arthur Renwick. Michael, 2006. 46 x 44 inches. Colour photography.
Arthur Renwick is an artist, musician and scholar. He grew up moving between two places that face each other across British Columbia’s Douglas Channel: Kitamaat Village, ancestral home of the Haisla First Nation, and Kitimat, a company town built in the 1950s to house workers at an aluminum smelter.
Renwick’s background informs his work, including the photographic series Mask, recently acquired by the National Gallery of Canada. Renwick discussed the complex history of Aboriginal photographs with fellow First Nations artists, who responded by “pulling faces” as the shutter snapped. They look out at the viewer, their faces distorted, in the must-see, larger-than-life portraits collected here.
The Richmond Art Gallery exhibition, which includes educational programs, will display four of the original Mask photographs and 12 new works.
