Vancouver 2010 Pictograms and Sport Illustrations

Pictograms are icons representing each sport and are found on maps, signage and other communications and creative applications. Every Olympic and Paralympic Games Host Country has added its own unique design to its pictograms.

Vancouver 2010 Sport Pictograms

Pictograms have traditionally relied on a simplified silhouette form to depict each sport. The Vancouver 2010 sport pictograms also depict each sport in silhouette form; however, there is an added dynamism of the athlete in motion. More focus has been put on the athlete in order to convey the human and heroic qualities within the pictogram and by highlighting areas on the athlete’s body and equipment to help to convey the energy.

Vancouver 2010 Sport Illustrations

As an Olympic and Paralympic Games first, Vancouver 2010 created a set of sport illustrations to accompany the sport pictograms. These sport illustrations give a highly detailed, true-to-life, and almost photographic sense of the athlete performing the sport. Facial expressions are detailed to show the determination and strength each athlete possesses in competition.

The sport illustrations are highly stylized with an exaggerated, close-up perspective of the athlete’s performance. The designs were inspired by modern sport photography, pop culture, fashion illustration and Manga-style comics, giving the athletes a heroic look to serve as an inspiration for young spectators.
