The Olympic News Service (ONS) is responsible for the collection, production and distribution of a wide range of news and information to the Olympic Family, with the main audience being the accredited press.
As press accreditations at the Games are limited, not all news organizations have the staff numbers necessary to follow all their country’s athletes across all venues. Similar to an international news and information agency, ONS is a valuable tool for the press, allowing journalists to follow events and developments they may have missed during the day.
During the Games, ONS swiftly generates and distributes reports such as news articles, results, event previews, reviews, flash quotes and press conference highlights. To further assist the press, ONS also provides a wide range of background information such as athlete biographies, historical results, facts and figures, and details on the various sports and disciplines.
ONS news is presented without bias or favour, and is independent of all external influence. Reporters and editors must work exclusively for ONS and must sever professional links to any other news organization during their employment.
ONS is run by experienced, professional journalists and technical experts to ensure accuracy, thoroughness, consistency and speed. During the Games, ONS operates as an international news agency with a central editorial desk and experienced venue sports-reporting teams. ONS is recruiting university students from journalism and communications programs to work as volunteer ONS reporters.
All accredited media can access ONS reports and other Games information through the Info2010 intranet system, with terminals located in the MPC, Venue Media Centres and Olympic Villages.
