Three Pillars, Two Movements, Lasting Legacies
When Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic Movement in
1894, he turned to the games of ancient Olympia as a model of
international cooperation. De Coubertin viewed Olympism as more
than sport. An educator first and foremost, he envisioned a
movement that would bring the peoples of the world together in
peace and celebrate the "harmonious education of the body and
mind."
