The Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique (FFCB) invited all Francophone youth attending schools administered by the Francophone School Board of British Columbia to take part in the “My Favourite Sport” Drawing Contest. In excess of 600 drawings were received.
Kindergarten-grade 3 category: Chloé Blankers, grade 2 student at École Victor-Brodeur.
Grade 4-7 category: Tyler Wong, grade 5 student at École Anne-Hébert.
Grade 8-12 category: Apsara Coeffic-Neou, grade 8 student at École Kitsilano.
Isabelle Loranger, grade 1 student at École La Vérendrye.
Noelle Côté, grade 3 student at École Franco-Nord.
In addition to having their drawings posted on the FFCB Website, the winners received a plush mascot, a backpack or a tuque in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games’ colours.
“I introduced the “My Favourite Sport” Drawing Contest to the class as a way of promoting the Olympics and an opportunity for the students to display their artistic talents to the Francophone community. There was no classroom time dedicated to the project, but it was nonetheless a mandatory sketchbook homework assignment.”
“I have been teaching art and Spanish at École Kitsilano as part of the Francophone curriculum since 2001.”
- Tara Irwin, École Kitsilano, Vancouver
“I integrated the drawing contest into my art class. We first identified the sports. Then I chose two children to come up to the front of the class to imitate a given sport. For example, pretending to throw a ball into a basket. The child would stop his movement and I would point out to the others how the arms and legs were positioned. Then each of them would create a quick charcoal sketch based on one of the two models. Then two more students came up to the front to display two different sports. We observed and then we created a second quick sketch. Before making our final decision for the contest, we once again talked about the sports that could be chosen and how the arms and legs are bent and not straight like stakes! There was a great deal of understanding among most of them and the drawings were rather impressive for first graders.”
