Sport events – international competitions such as World Cups or World Championships – took place at the 2010 competition venues in Vancouver and Whistler during 2008, with the last event in the fall of 2009. Sport events provide VANOC with the opportunity to test Games-time operations, train potential Games-time volunteers and allow the Canadian public a chance to experience the 15 sport disciplines that will be showcased at the 2010 Winter Games – along with the athletes who will likely compete in 2010.
VANOC does not directly facilitate Sport Events; however, it plays a supportive role to the international sport federations that host Sport Events at Vancouver 2010 venues. Sport Events are an opportunity to test operations, train potential Games-time volunteers and ensure that the venues are up to world-class standards.
