What does sustainability have to do with the Olympic and Paralympic Games?
The Games are above all about sport and about the athletes. But
they are also big and exciting events that attract huge crowds and
a lot of worldwide attention.
In the excitement of the Games, it would be easy to forget about
the environment and the communities that may be affected by the
construction of new facilities or other preparations. Instead, by
having sustainability as one of the central pillars of the 2010
Winter Games, we can use the Games as a springboard for leaving a
lasting legacy of revitalized communities and healthier citizens,
as well as improved environmental policies and practices at home
and increased environmental awareness around the world.
