Collaborations with 2010 Legacies Now

Vancouver’s bid to host the Games in 2010 was inspired by the belief that Olympic and Paralympic Games lead to new partnerships that benefit communities long after the Games are over. To capture those longer-term human and social legacies, 2010 Legacies Now was formed during the Vancouver Bid process.

2010 Legacies Now is a non-profit organization that works with interested governments, community organizations and businesses to expand the legacy benefits of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Its purpose is to leverage the Games to provide longer-term value in the areas of physical activity, sport and recreation, accessibility, arts, literacy and volunteerism.

Although inspired by the spirit and opportunities presented by the Games, the focus of 2010 Legacies Now is on individuals and communities. Unlike VANOC, it does not play a role in the staging of the 2010 Winter Games. As such, 2010 Legacies Now programs have been developed to meet community needs that can be achieved in more meaningful ways by leveraging the unique partnership opportunities presented by the Games. Priority groups for 2010 Legacies Now programs include youth, youth at risk, Aboriginal peoples, inner-city residents and people with a disability.

In addition to various accessibility, inner-city and Aboriginal projects, VANOC has worked with 2010 Legacies Now, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Foundation to raise $6.5 million for investment in arts and cultural organizations and works.
