RONA Vancouver 2010 Fabrication Shop
We work with our government partners, community organizations,
Games venue and site developers and the Vancouver Regional
Construction Association (VRCA) to ensure that Olympic-related
construction in the Vancouver area creates economic opportunities
for inner-city residents and businesses.
We VANOC furthered plans to operate a fabrication shop that will produce the medal podiums, ski racks, on-hill warming huts and other items needed at Games venues. A community model was refined to provide carpentry skills and job experience in the fabrication shop for up to 64 inner-city residents. VANOC is working with RONA, community organizations, government funders and industry to implement this carpentry training program. RONA, as part of its 2010 Winter Games sponsorship, provided labour to retrofit the space and will pay for lease costs, tools, equipment, materials and supervisory carpenters between 2007 and Games time.
Co-locating at the RONA Vancouver 2010 Fabrication Shop will be the VRCA-led training program called Construction Orientation and Retention for Employment (CORE). This training will prepare inner-city residents, Aboriginal peoples and others for entry-level construction jobs at Games sites, including the City of Vancouver-operated project to construct the Olympic and Paralympic Village Vancouver. Over 148 inner-city residents will have the opportunity to participate in the CORE training program.
