Workforce Health and Safety
VANOC has made a commitment to ensuring it delivers the highest
standards of health and safety for all employees, contractors and
volunteers, and to providing a legacy of safety – not
only for Canada but for future Games.
The VANOC Joint Health, Safety and Wellness Committee members meet every month to communicate and consult on issues affecting the health, safety and wellness of all workforce members.
Our VANOC Safety Management System was developed and implemented across the organization. A safety performance reporting process was also introduced. First reports were produced that began tracking progress against five performance indicators: discussions, inspections, training, incidents and injuries. We continue to increase our level of safety-performance recording and reporting in line with the increased activity at our venues.
As a result, in the last fiscal year, 18 incidents were recorded that were reportable to WorkSafeBC. Of these, 17 were the result of the following contractor activities: nine compensable lost-time injuries, seven incidents that had the potential to result in injury and one structural failure. One VANOC employee also incurred a compensable lost-time injury.
The data, collected monthly from all VANOC-controlled venues and reported every second month to the Sustainability and Human Resources Committee, provide timely and relevant information on VANOC’s safety performance and are used to continuously improve the VANOC Safety Management System.
A presentation by the VANOC health and safety manager is now included in all employee orientations. Regular news articles on safety topics appeared in the internal VANOC newsletter, and a poster campaign featuring employees and their loved ones was launched.
As part of the VANOC Venue Construction Safety Audit Program, which began in April 2006, all VANOC venue construction contractors are assessed for compliance with provincial safety legislation and VANOC safety standards.
