Community Engagement

VANOC participates in community meetings, presentations and events to enhance our understanding of current and emerging issues and interests. For instance, the Environmental Assessment processes required consultations with local governments, First Nations communities, environmental and community groups, and the public. These consultations help VANOC better understand the social, cultural and environmental impacts of its venue designs.

Areas of community concern included:

  • Accommodation and transportation
  • Provision of community services (fire, rescue and police services)
  • Employment, income, labour supply and property tax revenue
  • Public health
  • Protection of archaeological resources and heritage
  • Recognition of First Nations traditional territories
In specifically addressing the unique needs of Vancouver’s three inner-city communities, VANOC, its government partners and implementing agencies have established a consultative structure involving community input and representation through community advisory groups. This structure is designed to deliver actionable recommendations to key decision makers.

Consultation with inner-city communities
The ICI Steering Committee, established by VANOC and its three government partners, has or will be convening a series of community consultations to discuss and in some cases to make recommendations on, strategies for implementation of the Inner-City Inclusive (ICI) Commitments. Seven commitment areas were identified for discussion as detailed in the following chart. An eighth commitment area, accessibility, is deliverable directly by VANOC with guidance from the Disability Advisory Committee of 2010 Legacies Now.

This chart outlines the seven commitment areas identified for discussion on the Inner-City Inclusive Commitments
