Commuter Challenge
In 2007, VANOC, together with Beijing Organizing Committee for the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), committed to a Commuter Challenge as part of Clean Air Day on Wednesday, June 6, 2007. In support of a more environmentally-friendly society, the proposal addresses global warming by promoting activities on that day to help in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Reducing province-wide GHG (or carbon) emissions by 33 per cent from current levels by 2020

Setting legislated caps on industrial emissions and establishing an emissions-trading system

Establishing a new Carbon Trust to finance British Columbia-based offset projects involving new technologies to mitigate the effects of climate change

Making all British Columbia government agencies carbon-neutral by 2010

Public outreach and education to enable individual citizens to be more energy efficient
