Environmental Assessment (EA) Reviews
Environmental Assessment (EA) Reviews — VANOC will
meet or better all relevant provincial and federal government laws
by submitting venue development proposals for environmental impact
assessment reviews, which provides opportunities for First Nations,
public and stakeholder input.
We complied with all provincial and federal government laws by submitting venue development plans for environmental impact assessment. The environmental assessment process also helped us identify social and cultural impacts that needed to be addressed.
Background - Requirements under the Environmental Assessment (EA) Review Process
Federal and provincial EA processes ensure venue construction and operations result in minimal negative impacts to habitat and biodiversity. Environmental Assessment involves:

Background - Requirements under the Environmental Assessment (EA) Review Process
Federal and provincial EA processes ensure venue construction and operations result in minimal negative impacts to habitat and biodiversity. Environmental Assessment involves:
-
Submitting proposed project descriptions to regulatory authorities
-
Assessing potential environmental and socio-economic impacts
-
Establishing best practices to avoid and/or mitigate negative impacts
-
Developing Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) best management practices to guide construction and operations
-
Planning for post-Games operations and legacy
-
Seeking government, First Nations and public input
-
Proceeding with detailed planning, design and development upon regulatory approval
-
Monitoring and reporting regularly on EA commitments
VANOC is overseeing the construction or modification of several
facilities. Each venue has or will undergo some level of
environmental assessment. For the majority, an EA review was
required by law. For the rest, VANOC has voluntarily committed to
doing environmental assessments. The complexity of the
environmental approval process varies greatly, ranging from simple
in-house assessments to formal, comprehensive harmonized
federal/provincial reviews involving First Nations, stakeholder and
public input.
Formal regulatory EA reviews result in environmental commitments and assurances for which VANOC is legally obliged to demonstrate implementation and compliance. These environmental performance requirements extend from construction through to decommissioning and legacy handover and are reflected in site-specific Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) for each venue. Environmental monitoring and management activities at our venues include water quality monitoring; wildlife management; sediment and erosion control; solid and liquid waste management plans; site-specific spill prevention and contingency response plans; and restoration of disturbed areas.

Environmental Approval, Management and
Monitoring at VANOC Venues
With the exception of the Trout Lake Rink (figure skating
training venue), we have completed most EA reviews for our venues.
As our venue construction program proceeds, VANOC continues to
implement all relevant EA commitments and assurances.
