Olympic Games Impact Report
Our series of
sustainability
reports tracks VANOC’s performance
against objectives we establish, control and influence. We also
report on broader regional and national impacts through our
participation in the IOC’s Olympic Games Impact (OGI)
Project. The purpose of the OGI Project is to introduce a
standardized cross-Games method of monitoring, measuring and
reporting on the long-term impact of hosting an Olympic Games. This
is a multi-year project with a broad regional and national context.
It requires a Host City to collaborate with an independent research
partner on the analysis of a suite of social, economic and
environmental indicators.
The timeframe for the project extends from the date that a city
applies to host an Olympic Games to three years after the Games are
over. Four OGI reports are prepared; the third report, prepared 12
months after the Games have ended, becomes part of the official
report on a particular Games. The OGI Project seeks to promote
ongoing improvement in Games management and to assist bidding
cities and future Games organizers in their efforts to maximize
benefits.
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (Beijing 2008) agreed to participate in OGI. Vancouver 2010 and London 2012, however, are the first Winter and Summer Games obligated to undertake OGI as part of their Host City Contracts with the IOC.
VANOC’s responsibility extends to the production of reports about the impact of the 2010 Winter Games in 2007, 2009, and immediately following the Games, while the Canadian Olympic Committee will deliver the final OGI report in 2013. In collaboration with Environment Canada and a local sustainability non-government organization, the Fraser Basin Council, VANOC established an advisory group to help guide development of our first OGI report, entitled the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games Impact Program Baseline Report.
VANOC submitted the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games Impact Program Baseline Report to the IOC in October 2007. The next report of the OGI project will be issued in 2009. For more information, contact info@vancouver2010.com.
