Recommendation on Housing Commitments for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
On March 19, 2007, a community-based advisory table submitted
recommendations to the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010
Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), the City of Vancouver
and the federal and provincial governments on how to implement Bid
commitments related to inner-city housing.
Entitled
Report
of the Inner City Inclusive (ICI) Housing Table,
representatives from community organizations, business and
government participated in this consultation process and made 25
recommendations on how to implement the five inner-city housing
commitments made during the Bid phase. The five housing commitments
are to:
-
Provide an affordable housing legacy and start planning early in the pre-Gamers period
-
Protect rental housing stock
-
Provide many alternative forms of temporary accommodation for Games’ visitors and workers
-
Ensure people are not made homeless as a result of the Games
-
Ensure residents are not involuntarily displaced, evicted or face unreasonable increases in rent as a result of the Games
VANOC, the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia
and the Government of Canada are reviewing the recommendations and
will respond to them by the end of June 2007.
About the Inner-City Inclusive Commitment Statement
Guided by an independent assessment of the impact of hallmark
events on socially and economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods in
host communities, the
Inner-City
Inclusive Commitment Statement
was developed to ensure the legacy of the 2010 Games is one
that creates benefits and manages potential adverse impacts on
Vancouver’s three inner-city neighbourhoods. The
Statement was submitted to the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) as part of Vancouver’s Bid to host the 2010
Winter Games, and has been endorsed by VANOC and its federal,
provincial and municipal government partners.
