Abattoir is Kaeja d’ Dance’s new dance creation where the disciplines of dance, new opera, music and theatre intertwine. AChutzpah! Festival and Vancouver International Dance Festivalco-presentation and world premiere, it explores the imagistic world and thought processes of a young boy as he attempts to come to terms with the persistent cycle of disassociation and dehumanization between cultures throughout history. His discoveries are seamlessly revealed through highly charged dance sequences, dramatic narrative and exquisite new opera vocals. Some of Canada’s most talented artists make up the artistic team: Tanya Crowder, Robert Halley, Susan Lee, Tim Spronk, Ryan Lee, Allen and Karen Kaeja, Jason Sherman, Fides Krucker, Aaron Willis, Edgardo Moreno and Roelof (Ron) Snippe. Together they create a richly layered work, examining ideas that continue to emerge and connect with our contemporary world. Allen Kaeja’s signature kinetic aesthetic, dense with hard-edged movement, meets Karen Kaeja’s liquid, sensual athleticism and choreographic lyricism to create a work full of depth and beauty.

Established in 1991, Kaeja d’Dance is a Toronto-based dance company renowned for creating exceptional contemporary dance work, award winning dance films and empowering education and outreach programs.

At the heart of Kaeja are two dynamic energies: co-artistic directors Karen and Allen Kaeja . With their company of accomplished dancers, Karen and Allen push the boundaries of Canadian contemporary dance and infuse local and international communities with exciting new experiences both on and off the stage. They are also pioneers in the emerging genre of Dance on Screen – the Kaejas have created 14 acclaimed dance films since 1997.
