The Avatar Circus Project

In the world of video games and virtual reality, avatars take our place. They are the onscreen stand-ins for our flesh and blood, endowed with powers that we can only dream of. Or maybe not—maybe dreams can come true. The Avatar Circus Project is about what can happen when we expand past the humdrum walls that confine us, flirt with our avatars and bring our passions to life.

Performed by eight of Vancouver’s brightest up and coming circus artists, the show is a true ensemble piece, infused with dynamic choreography that combines a number of circus disciplines—acrobatics, hand balancing, dance, juggling, unicycle, aerial straps and more. The featured acts will be tied together with a theatrical narrative created especially for families, an adventure for young and old alike.

The Avatar Circus Project is a contemporary circus performance featuring young circus professionals that seamlessly blend dance, physical theatre, new media and comedy with breathtaking disciplines that require incredible strength and focus. This style of “new circus” eschews clichés. You won’t see clowns in fright wigs or animals in cages. Instead, audiences are engaged with strong storytelling and the spectacular artistry of performers at the peak of their abilities.

The Avatar Circus Project is the latest endeavour from CirKids , a circus school in Vancouver that has been serving youth aged 5 to 19 years since 1985. The school provides instruction for kids who want to experience the joys of circus arts, including hand balancing, juggling, unicycle and aerial acrobatics, among others. CirKids alumni have gone on to the National Circus School, Cirque du Soleil, and to become professional circus performers around the world.
