An elegant and witty comedy of manners, this production is the
world premiere of a new Morris Panych adaptation of a classic
comedy by Viennese playwright Arthur Schnitzler. The tale is told
through the wry commentary of Max, an older and wiser friend of the
eponymous Anatol. The play is constructed as a series of romantic
adventures featuring our handsome philanderer and some radically
different women set in fin de siècle Vienna. All of the
female characters are played by one actress, and this theatrical
triangle promises to delight a wide range of theatre goers with its
wit and razor sharp satirical observations. With this contemporary
adaptation, Panych brings Schnitzler’s delightful
classic firmly into the 21st century, engaging us in an acutely
observed social commentary.
This production is directed by Morris Panych and designed by Ken
Macdonald. Joining this internationally-renowned creative team is
award winning lighting designer Alan Brodie. The part of Anatol
will be played by the Shaw Festival’s Michael Shara,
and joining him will be acclaimed Vancouver actors David Marr and
Jennifer Lines.
