In what can only be described as a coup, Capilano College brings
together a double-bill of two of the most in-demand acts on the
folk/roots circuit today. The Wailin’ Jennys are a
sublimely talented trio from Winnipeg that has set a standard for
beautiful harmonies and instantly hummable tunes. Soprano Ruth
Moody and mezzo Nicky Mehta are founding members who have anchored
this Juno Award-winning group since the first line-up. The critical
third alto voice was filled in turn by Cara Luft, Annabelle
Chvostek and now, new recruit Heather Masse.
Complimenting the Jennys in artistry, singer/songwriter Kelly
Joe Phelps’s creative muse is continuously evolving and
developing. While his music is strongly rooted in the blues, his
style is uniquely his own. His improvisational skills and
finger-picking guitar style is always masterful and fresh. However,
it is his voice that is coming into its own of late. His
songwriting – the lyrics and strongly- crafted melodies
– demonstrates that Kelly Joe Phelps is an artist
firmly at the top of his game.
